I have been on the founder-to-exit journey, often starting with nothing more than a blank sheet of paper.
Working with some great people, I have managed to navigate my way through the various challenges and successfully sell three businesses, each larger than the previous one. Would I do some things differently next time to achieve a better result? Absolutely!
Failure is such an important teacher. Over the years, I have made lots of mistakes, and also suffered a little bit of bad luck, but each failure has delivered value in the form of an important lesson.
I was never cut out to work in the corporate world or politics! I much prefer to (politely) get straight to the point. I am not afraid to ask a stupid question or take a risk. A good sense of humour is essential too!
I have mostly been involved with tech and software businesses for the last 25 years. I am certainly not a coder, though I have employed and worked with some exceptional teams. I therefore have experience of delivering software using several different models (in-house SaaS products, consultancy, agency), each of which present different challenges. I have seen various technologies and methodologies come and go; the important lesson was that the business fundamentals do not change.
As a serial founder, I have worked in a hands-on capacity in nearly every aspect of a business during my 25 year career: sales, marketing, operations, customer service, engineering, finance, HR, legal etc. I have established and built out these functions and then recruited excellent people to take them over.
I spent most of the last decade working at board level devising and overseeing the strategy to achieve our goal: a successful exit and early retirement.
